Research Engineer, Universes

Overview

Research Engineer for the Universes team, building training environments and evaluations for capable and safe agentic AI. The role blends research and engineering to develop novel approaches, implement them, and ship them into production training.

What you'll do

• Build the next generation of agentic environments.
• Design rigorous evaluations that measure real capability.
• Collaborate with research and infrastructure teams to ship environments into production training.
• Debug and iterate rapidly across research and production ML stacks.
• Contribute to research culture through technical discussions and collaborative problem-solving.

What you'll need

• Build robust infrastructure with strong software engineering skills.
• Contribute with high agency and the ability to operate under uncertainty.
• Balance research exploration with engineering implementation.
• Have good research taste or senior technical experience with good judgment in complex problem spaces.
• Be able to enjoy/perform pair programming.

Details

• Annual salary range: $500,000–$850,000 USD.
• Location-based hybrid policy: expect staff in an office at least 25% of the time.
• Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience).
• Visa sponsorship: the company sponsors visas for some roles/candidates and makes every reasonable effort for offers.
