Overview
Senior Backend Engineer (Go) on GitLab’s Gitaly team, building GitLab’s Git data storage tier for reliable, secure, fast Git repository access via APIs and storage operations.
What you'll do
- Own moderately sized to complex technical initiatives from problem definition through rollout and operational follow-through.
- Serve as directly responsible individual by aligning stakeholders, communicating progress/trade-offs, and managing risks.
- Lead technical design for distributed storage, repository management, performance, reliability, and scalability.
- Partner across Git, Infrastructure, SRE, Dedicated, and customer-facing teams to deliver cross-functional outcomes.
- Improve engineering practices via mentoring, documentation, knowledge sharing, design reviews, and code reviews.
- Provide operational support including incident response, post-incident improvements, capacity/performance analysis, and customer escalations.
- Handle user emergencies, platform alerts, and support requests with regular on-call duties.
What you'll need
- Significant experience building, debugging, and optimizing distributed or highly available software in large-scale production environments.
- Experience owning complex end-to-end projects including technical design, execution, rollout, and operational support.
- Strong systems design skills covering performance, failure modes, consistency, concurrency, capacity, and observability.
- Experience with Go or another backend or systems language.
- Professional experience operating production systems and participating in incident response.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for explaining complex concepts and trade-offs.
Nice to have
- Experience with Ruby, Git internals, gRPC, or Git server infrastructure.
