Overview
Build and run backend services for APEXX's payment orchestration platform, covering payment flows, routing, connectors, tokenisation, webhooks and reconciliation. The senior role also includes reliability ownership, on-call operations and engineering mentorship.
What you'll do
- Own card and alternative-payment flows from design through production.
- Evolve routing, cascading, Smart Split and outage-failover logic.
- Build connectors to acquirers, APMs and BNPL providers.
- Design idempotency, timeouts, webhooks and reconciliation for failure scenarios.
- Run on-call operations, SLOs, dashboards, incidents and blameless RCAs.
- Improve GitLab CI/CD and AWS services including ECS, Lambda, API Gateway and S3.
- Write designs, review code, mentor engineers and work with cross-functional teams.
What you'll need
- Significant experience building and running production backend services with Java and Spring Boot or a comparable stack.
- Strong knowledge of distributed-systems failure modes, retries, idempotency and eventual consistency.
- Solid PostgreSQL skills and practical Redis or similar cache experience.
- Hands-on AWS, CI/CD, containers and infrastructure-as-code experience.
- Production ownership including on-call, observability, incident leadership and technical documentation.
- Clear written communication and experience with reviews, pairing or mentoring.
- Productive, critical use of AI coding tools with testing and review.
Nice to have
- Payments experience, including card acquiring, 3DS2/SCA, tokens, APMs, BNPL or reconciliation.
- Knowledge of PCI DSS, HSMs, key management, OAuth2 or mTLS.
- Experience with observability, SLO alerting, Snowflake or QuickSight.
- Scale-up or fintech experience with UK or global teams.
