Job description

Overview

Senior Electronics Design Engineer on the Home Interconnects & Interconnect Controls team, owning board architecture for interconnect products that tie generators, energy storage, transfer switches, load-management devices, and metering into a coordinated home energy system.

What you'll do

  • Own and drive the board architecture, including partitioning, interface definition, component selection, and power architecture.
  • Design analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits: AC-DC power supplies, DC-DC converters, power management, signal conditioning, sensor interfaces, communications, and embedded control systems.
  • Design and validate AC voltage, current, and power measurement circuits, including revenue-grade metering, with attention to accuracy, calibration, and applicable standards.
  • Design high-power relay and relay-drive circuits for load switching, including coil drive, snubbing, contact protection, and coordination with embedded control.
  • Perform schematic capture, component selection, simulation, PCB design reviews, and hardware debugging.
  • Balance design tradeoffs across performance, cost, reliability, manufacturability, and schedule.
  • Apply functional safety and safety-critical design principles throughout, including DFMEA and compliance with standards such as UL 991.
  • Drive Design for Excellence (DFx): manufacturability, test, reliability, and cost.
  • Develop and execute verification and validation plans spanning bench, environmental, and system-integration testing.
  • Support new product introduction (NPI) through pilot builds, design verification, and production launch.
  • Support manufacturing and production at scale, resolving production issues and root-causing hardware failures across development, validation, manufacturing, and the field.
  • Work with suppliers to evaluate components and resolve technical issues.
  • Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, and test engineering to deliver robust, cost-effective products.
  • Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership through design reviews, design standards, and architecture decisions.
  • Stay current with industry design trends and provide a roadmap for applying new technologies to our products.
  • Improve engineering processes, design standards, and documentation.

What you'll need

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in mixed-signal electronic hardware design and product development.
  • Experience designing products through full product development cycles and into production.
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout review using Altium Designer or similar PCB and schematic capture tools.
  • Experience debugging complex electronic systems using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other laboratory equipment.
  • Strong background in analog and digital circuit design.
  • Hands-on experience with power-conversion design (AC-DC and/or DC-DC) and microcontroller-based embedded control systems.
  • Demonstrated experience owning and driving board-level architecture, defining partitioning, interfaces, and design tradeoffs, not solely executing schematic and layout to a given spec.
  • Knowledge of AC voltage, current, and power measurement, including revenue-grade metering and the associated accuracy and calibration considerations.
  • Knowledge of high-power relays and relay-drive circuit design for load switching.
  • Knowledge of functional safety and safety-critical design, including DFMEA and safety standards such as UL 991.
  • Ability to work with firmware, read and understand requirements, and modify firmware to support hardware bring-up and test, with hands-on use of UART and CAN bus monitoring tools.

Nice to have

  • Master's or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience developing electronic products for high volume manufacturing.
  • Experience with a range of communication protocols (CAN, UART, SPI, I²C, Ethernet, USB) and related hardware.
  • Experience with hardware validation, reliability testing, and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with simulation tools for analog, power, and signal integrity analysis.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Test (DFT), Design for Reliability (DFR), and Design for Cost (DFC).
  • Familiarity with automated test development and fault injection techniques.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively on cross functional teams.
  • Experience with renewable energy, battery systems, power electronics, or RF design is strongly preferred.
