Overview
As a Senior Software Engineer I, you will design software across multiple components, develop Power BI reporting and dashboard solutions, translate user and stakeholder requests into solutions, and develop mentoring skills for more junior team members.
What you'll do
- Design, develop, and maintain Power BI reports and interactive dashboards.
- Work with business stakeholders to understand reporting and analytical requirements and translate them into Power BI solutions.
- Develop and maintain Power BI data models using appropriate modelling techniques.
- Develop and optimise DAX measures, calculated columns, calculated tables, and Power Query transformations using M.
- Connect Power BI to SQL Server, Oracle, APIs, and other business systems.
- Work with Data Engineers to ensure appropriate data structures and datasets are available for reporting requirements, including advanced-level SQL troubleshooting.
- Develop and maintain reusable datasets, semantic models, and reporting solutions.
- Implement data validation and quality checks to ensure reporting accuracy and consistency.
- Apply Row-Level Security and other Power BI security features where required.
- Publish, manage, and maintain reports and datasets in Power BI Service.
- Support Power BI workspaces, apps, scheduled refreshes, and deployment processes.
- Troubleshoot report, data refresh, performance, and connectivity issues.
- Optimise Power BI reports and data models to improve performance and usability.
- Use Performance Analyzer, DAX Studio, Tabular Editor, and the Power BI Capacity Metrics App to troubleshoot and optimise Power BI solutions and capacity usage.
- Implement and manage incremental refresh across multiple semantic models.
- Implement and manage Power BI gateways, configurations, and data sources within Power BI Service.
- Work with the support team to troubleshoot and resolve reporting issues in the Production environment.
- Apply Microsoft Fabric capabilities to support capacity and configuration management and contribute to solution design.
- Ensure dashboards and reports follow visualisation and design standards.
- Maintain source code and Power BI development assets using GitHub and version control best practices.
- Produce technical and user documentation for Power BI solutions.
- Support users with Power BI reporting and provide guidance on best practices.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of Business Intelligence and reporting standards and practices.
What you'll need
- 3–5 years of commercial experience developing Power BI solutions.
- Strong experience with Microsoft Power BI, including Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, Power Query, Advanced DAX, data modelling, dashboards and interactive reports, Microsoft Fabric features and capabilities, and reporting best practices.
- Strong knowledge of DAX, including creating and optimising measures using a broad range of functions and calculated expressions.
- Strong experience working with databases, particularly Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle using SQL Developer.
- Strong SQL knowledge, including views, Common Table Expressions, RANK and other window functions, execution plans, indexing and keys, stored procedures, query optimisation, and troubleshooting.
- Experience developing data models using star schema and dimensional modelling principles, including large and complex models containing 30+ tables.
- Experience connecting Power BI to Oracle, SQL Server, and other data sources.
- Good understanding of Power Query and M for data transformation and preparation.
- Experience managing and publishing reports through Power BI Service.
- Experience configuring and troubleshooting scheduled data refreshes.
- Understanding of Power BI security, including Row-Level Security.
- Experience troubleshooting and optimising Power BI report and semantic model performance.
- Experience using GitHub or another source control system for version management.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Analytics, Business Intelligence, or a related discipline, or equivalent commercial experience.
- Strong attention to detail, organisation, communication, collaboration, independence, and ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to translate complex data into clear and meaningful visualisations.
- Commitment to accurate, reliable, and user-friendly reporting solutions and to keeping up to date with Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and Business Intelligence best practices.

- Experience integrating Power BI with Salesforce.
- Experience working with REST APIs and API-based data sources.
- Experience working alongside Data Engineering teams and ETL processes.
- Knowledge of SSIS and/or Talend.
- Experience with web analytical platforms.
- Experience with Power BI deployment pipelines and application lifecycle management.
- Knowledge of AWS and/or Azure data services.
- Experience with Power BI gateway configuration and administration.
- Familiarity with Agile development methodologies.
- Experience supporting enterprise-level Business Intelligence environments.
