Overview
Join one of two full-stack engineering teams in WEX's Mobility organization as a Software Development Engineer I. You will build specific components within established architectures, working on either the 10-4 (OTR) platform or the NA Mobility Platform frontend infrastructure.
What you'll do
- Build specific components within an established architecture, following the patterns your team has set (microservices, event-driven design, or component-based frontend).
- Write clean, compilable code with unit tests that meet the team's quality standards.
- Ask questions about acceptance criteria and error states before starting to build.
- Identify and fix bugs in well-defined tasks by reproducing issues and working with senior engineers on the fix.
- Handle low-priority support tickets as a first responder and participate in on-call rotations under supervision.
- Run specific checks and scripts as directed during incidents.
- Add error and info logging that helps the team debug issues.
- Keep Jira updated daily, follow the Definition of Done, and raise flags immediately if work is at risk.
- Take part in standups, backlog grooming, and demos, including listening to stakeholder feedback.
- Use AI tools such as Cursor or similar, and validate AI-generated output before shipping it.
- Update documentation when you find something inaccurate or missing.
What you'll need
- B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science from a reputed institution, with 0 to 1 year of professional experience.
- Solid grounding in data structures, algorithms, and software design.
- Comfort writing clean, compilable, tested code in at least one of Java, Python, or TypeScript/JavaScript.
- Understanding of the testing pyramid and experience writing unit tests through coursework, an internship, or a personal project.
- Knowledge of never hardcoding secrets, a basic understanding of IAM and role-based access control, and willingness to learn compliance requirements such as PCI or SOC.
- Working knowledge of Git and pull requests, ability to deploy to an existing CI/CD pipeline, and ability to tell when your commit caused a build failure.
- Ability to ask focused questions when blocked and explain what you have already tried.
- Ability to receive code review feedback without defensiveness and to learn your team's standards and tools.
- Comfort switching between tasks within a project when priorities shift.
Nice to have
- Degree in computer science or software engineering from a reputed institution.
- Internship or co-op experience where you shipped real code to a production or staging environment as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
- Familiarity with cloud basics through coursework or personal projects.
- Exposure to Docker, including reading and running existing Dockerfiles.
- Experience working in an existing codebase, contributing improvements, and navigating code you did not write.
- Awareness of AI tools beyond code completion, such as prompt design or modifying a simple AI-powered script or agent.
- A genuine interest in payments, fleet operations, or developer platform work.
