Overview
Staff Software Engineer role within WEX Mobility Engineering, focused on fleet management and mobility payments solutions and cross-team technical leadership.
What you'll do
- Define and evolve architecture across multiple Mobility services, resolving cross-team bottlenecks.
- Lead architecture reviews and technical workshops across engineering, product, security, compliance, operations, and partner teams.
- Establish golden paths, reference architectures, and reusable libraries/frameworks for APIs, service communication, event integrations, and data access.
- Set standards for REST/public APIs, internal gRPC APIs, service contracts, versioning, compatibility, and integration patterns.
- Design secure, scalable, highly available systems and drive security-by-design and compliance-by-design practices.
- Define SLI/SLO and observability standards and drive resilience improvements via chaos testing.
- Lead incident technical resolution and drive systemic reliability fixes; build self-service tools and automation.
What you'll need
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
- 7-12 years of professional software engineering experience with technical leadership across multiple teams or systems.
- Deep understanding of data structures and algorithms, object-oriented design, distributed systems, and complex problem solving.
- Experience designing and evolving internet-scale services with scalability, availability, security, reliability, and operability.
- Backend development expertise in Java or C#, including Spring Boot, and RESTful APIs, ODATA services, gRPC interfaces, and SQL-based systems.
- Experience with event-driven architecture and technologies such as Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes, and infrastructure as code.
- Experience with observability (SLI/SLO, incident management, resilience testing, production readiness) and secure API design including threat modeling and PCI DSS/regulatory environments.
Nice to have
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
- Experience in card payments, fleet management, mobility, or other financial technology domains.
- Experience with mobile development on iOS or Android.
- Experience leading organization-wide or multi-team platform, modernization, or reliability initiatives.
- Experience creating internal developer platforms, golden paths, reusable frameworks, or engineering standards adopted by multiple teams.
