Software Development Manager

Overview

The Software Development Manager leads a software development team responsible for delivering quality software, driving team growth and output, and meeting assigned business goals. The role participates in software design, implementation, testing, deployment, Agile development strategies, and product roadmap planning.

What you'll do

• Lead a team to develop quality software used by technology firms, fixed income asset managers, and security traders.
• Ensure the team's success, growth, and output.
• Provide training, guidance, and mentorship to individuals on the team.
• Participate in Agile meetings to contribute to development strategies and the product roadmap.
• Produce feature enhancements and react quickly to emerging technologies.
• Encourage collaboration and stimulate creativity.
• Provide leadership and expertise to the workforce.
• Set clear expectations for direct reports and meet weekly with direct reports one-on-one.
• Develop plans for team members' growth into a long-term role.
• Proactively foster a respectful workplace culture within the team.
• Ensure team processes are followed and effective, including processes that ensure quality code deploys.
• Serve as a role model for good coding practices.
• Function effectively as a L2 SDE.
• Communicate expectations effectively and follow up on them.
• Share positive and negative feedback in a way that encourages ownership and action.
• Identify tasks, actions, and responsibilities for immediate direct reports to help them grow in capability.
• Drive large projects to ship.
• Serve as a technical leader across a large domain.
• Coordinate with others to deliver products that require multiple components.
• Communicate with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, identify tasks, provide estimates, and meet production deadlines.
• Resolve conflict within and across teams and drive consensus to achieve common goals.
• Provide technical feedback and guidance on architecture, code review, and best practices.

What you'll need

• Demonstrated ability to provide constructive feedback to team members.
• Experience communicating with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, identify tasks, provide estimates, and meet production deadlines.
• Knowledge of professional software engineering best practices for the full software development life cycle.
• Ability to resolve conflict within and across teams and drive consensus to achieve common goals.
• Ability to provide technical feedback and guidance on architecture, code review, and best practices.
• 7+ years of experience in software development.
• 2+ years of experience leading a development team.
• Demonstrated knowledge of computer science fundamentals, including object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms.
• Fluency in Java or a similar object-oriented language.
• Experience implementing and consuming large-scale web services.
• Strong problem-solving skills.

• Ability to present complex technical designs in a concise manner.
• Ability to work with relational and NoSQL databases.
• Experience building highly scalable distributed software systems.

• Experience taking a project from scoping requirements through actual launch.
