Overview
Senior Unix/Linux engineering role owning the architecture and health of the Linux side of Developer Compute, including the fleet of AWS WorkSpaces, WSL, and related Linux configuration.
What you'll do
- Architect and own the Linux compute platform design decisions for AWS WorkSpaces, WSL, and the Linux fleet.
- Set Ansible automation standards for configuration, patching, and lifecycle management via peer review.
- Serve as final technical authority for hard Unix/identity/infrastructure problems that survive first-line troubleshooting.
- Resolve fleet-wide health issues by investigating unhealthy or stuck WorkSpaces and fixing root causes via Ansible.
- Troubleshoot authentication and identity plumbing (Kerberos/KCM caches, kinit failures, GSSAPI/publickey SSH auth issues, STS endpoint assumptions).
- Maintain package management and toolchains across Linux distros, Homebrew, and internal package repositories.
- Build observability for Ansible run failures and workspace health, and develop diagnostic tooling for self-service issues.
What you'll need
- Have 5–8+ years of Linux systems engineering experience with ownership of production Linux fleets.
- Have hands-on experience operating and troubleshooting AWS WorkSpaces or equivalent Linux VDI.
- Be comfortable with systemd, PAM, Kerberos/KCM credential caches, and SSH auth mechanisms (publickey, GSSAPI).
- Use strace/journalctl/perf to diagnose root causes (not just restart services).
- Have strong hands-on Ansible skills (playbooks/roles, idempotency, staged rollout) and work with merge-request workflows.
- Know Linux package managers across distros (apt/dnf), Homebrew, and declarative package/environment managers (e.g., Nix-based tooling).
- Have solid AWS fundamentals (IAM, STS, VPC networking) plus enough Active Directory/Kerberos literacy to debug identity issues.
