Overview

Data Protection (Backup and Recovery) Engineer role in the Infrastructure Engineering team at MSD's Hyderabad Technology Centre, designing, implementing and managing backup and recovery solutions to ensure data integrity and availability.

What you'll do

• Design, develop and maintain advanced backup and recovery solutions using tools such as Cohesity, AWS Backup, Azure backups and Commvault.
• Develop and implement automated solutions for backup and recovery processes to enhance efficiency and reduce manual intervention (preferably Python, Ansible, PS, GitHub Actions).
• Develop and manage self-service features for customers to facilitate their own backup and recovery tasks (API based using Python, Ansible, PS, GitHub Actions).
• Lead the optimisation of backup processes, ensuring data is backed up and available for recovery according to established schedules and policies.
• Proactively troubleshoot complex backup and recovery operational blockers and provide expert guidance.
• Enable and lead problem investigation for unknown root cause situations and ensure proper corrective and preventive actions are performed.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement comprehensive data protection strategies.
• Conduct regular testing of backup and recovery processes to ensure effectiveness, reliability and compliance with industry standards.
• Work with the product manager to define the product roadmap and own, run and participate in agile ceremonies.
• Maintain detailed documentation of backup configurations, processes and procedures.
• Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies related to data protection and recovery, and provide thought leadership within the organization.

What you'll need

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology or a related field.
• Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in backup and recovery engineering or a related field, with a focus on senior-level responsibilities.
• Proven experience with backup solutions such as Cohesity, AWS backups, Azure backups, PPDM, RMAN and BRTools, and familiarity with Commvault, Rubrik and others.
• Extensive experience with CI/CD and automation tools, specifically Ansible Tower and GitHub Actions for backup and recovery processes.
• Extensive experience in creating scripts, preferably using Python, PS and API based automations via Ansible and GitHub Actions.
• Experience with agile frameworks using tools such as Jira and Confluence as primary trackers for development, testing and deployment.
• Experience with scalable architectures for backup storage.
• Experience with Data Protection as a Service (DPaaS) solutions.
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, specifically AWS and Azure, for backup and recovery solutions.
• In-depth experience with Dell Data Domain storage systems.
• Strong understanding of backup and recovery methodologies and best practices, with the ability to apply this knowledge to complex scenarios.
• Expert level proficiency in scripting and automation (e.g., Python, PowerShell) to enhance backup processes and develop automated solutions.
• Advanced knowledge of API based platforms, building automations via API to deliver services to customers.
• Advanced knowledge of storage technologies and architectures.
• Extensive experience with disaster recovery planning and execution.
• Experience with different operating systems (e.g., Windows Servers, RHEL) and container solutions (e.g., Kubernetes).
• Familiarity with cloud-based backup solutions and hybrid environments.
• Experience with storage systems (SAN, NAS, cloud ONTAP).
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to collaborate with team members and stakeholders.
• Strong analytical skills to assess backup performance and identify areas for improvement.

Nice to have

• Relevant certifications (e.g., Cohesity Certified Expert, AWS certifications) are highly desirable.
• Familiarity with self-service portal tools and frameworks for customer interaction.
• Knowledge of developing and using agentic AI use cases for data protection and recovery situations.
