Software Engineer I (Java Backend Development) on the Alternative Payment Methods team, designing and running APM microservices and non-card payment integrations.
What you'll do
- Design, implement, test, deploy, and run APM microservices and components.
- Contribute to component-level design: data models, APIs, SLAs/SLOs, and integration patterns (webhooks, polling, async messaging).
- Deliver new non-card payment integrations: build adapters/connectors, map provider APIs, handle webhooks, support local currencies and regulations.
- Work iteratively through provider sandboxes, certifications, and phased rollouts to speed launches.
- Join the on-call rota with guidance; follow runbooks and improve alerts, dashboards, and docs.
- Add metrics, logs, and traces to monitor integration health and success rates.
- Participate in code/design reviews; follow secure, performant, and reliable coding practices.
- Collaborate with product, QA, SRE, compliance, and regional teams to hit launch dates.
- Triage and fix bugs; do focused refactors and reduce technical debt within components.
What you'll need
- 2-4 years of software engineering experience (or equivalent).
- Proficient with Java, Spring Boot, and Docker.
- TDD is essential.
- Strong automated testing (unit, integration, contract).
- Understanding of distributed systems and integrations: idempotency, retries/backoff, timeouts, circuit breakers, partitioning, fault tolerance.
- Experience with CI/CD and release automation; GitHub-based workflows.
- Comfortable with Agile delivery and continuous improvement.
- Fluent in English (written and verbal).
Nice to have
- Kubernetes, AWS, or OpenShift.
- Kafka or other messaging systems.
- Payments/fintech experience (APMs, scheme integrations), knowledge of regional payment landscapes, PCI-DSS awareness.
- Observability tools (Prometheus/Grafana, OpenTelemetry) and feature flags.
- Experience with provider sandboxes, certification, and staged rollouts.
