Staff Backend Engineer - Grafana Second Horizon | Germany | Remote

Overview

Staff Backend Engineer role focused on building the first production services for an AI-native context layer management system for agents and enterprise context retrieval.

What you'll do

• Design, implement, test, and operate backend services for context ingestion, indexing, retrieval orchestration, and API access.
• Build a scalable multi-tenant SaaS foundation with tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs, and background jobs.
• Create agent-facing retrieval workflows via APIs/service interfaces for tools and applications to access context, provenance, confidence signals, and warnings.
• Work with the team to balance fast experimentation with long-term reliability as the project moves from prototype to production.
• Instrument services with metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and dashboards to improve reliability.
• Contribute to technical direction across architecture, service boundaries, storage choices, API contracts, and deployment patterns.

What you'll need

• Experience building production-grade, user-facing software systems.
• Practical AI experience focused on delivering real-world solutions.
• Comfort releasing prototypes, collecting feedback, and iterating pragmatically.
• Experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, and applications powered by GenAI.
• Proven track record delivering software that reached production and is actively used by users.
• Exposure to cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
• Experience using observability tools to understand and troubleshoot system behavior.
