Staff Backend Engineer - NIRA

Overview

Lead the technical direction and end-to-end delivery of a core NIRA credit-platform domain as a Staff Backend Engineer. The role includes architecture, complex initiatives, incident leadership, mentoring, and cross-team technical influence.

What you'll do

• Lead strategy, design, and delivery for a core NIRA platform domain.
• Set technical direction and surface strategic risks.
• Drive high-stakes initiatives from design through launch.
• Promote AI-native engineering tools including Claude, Cursor, and Augment.
• Mentor engineers through Senior level and raise technical standards.
• Lead SEV1 and lower-severity incidents through resolution.
• Influence product roadmaps through technical tradeoffs.

What you'll need

• 9+ years building web APIs.
• Experience with Java and Spring Boot is preferred.
• Deep experience with financial systems, state machines, and complex lifecycles.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems and queue-based architectures.
• Experience scaling consumer products at high transaction volume.
• End-to-end ownership of initiative design, execution, and reporting.
• Experience mentoring engineers and making decisions with incomplete information.
