Overview
Senior-level firmware engineer role building embedded software for Samsara's cloud-connected sensor platform, which runs on millions of devices deployed by industrial and enterprise customers.
What you'll do
- Evaluate and select hardware components, including SoC, flash/RAM and sensor combinations, and prove out choices on prototypes.
- Bring up new hardware platforms and prototypes from virgin silicon, configuring I/O and getting SPI, I2C, UART and BLE working.
- Own peripheral drivers, secure bootloaders, device firmware updates, and core power and connectivity management layers.
- Design protocols and hardware management for battery-powered sensors and gateways to maximize device life.
- Partner with product, full-stack, mobile and quality engineers so firmware data arrives intact and useful to end users.
- Lead by example as a force multiplier: deliver thoughtful designs, rigorous reviews, and hands-on mentorship to other engineers.
- Lead firmware development for new products end to end, from concept through architecture, implementation, validation and launch.
What you'll need
- 8+ years building firmware for resource-constrained systems.
- Experience leading firmware development for several new products end to end.
- Substantial bare-metal and RTOS experience, such as Zephyr, FreeRTOS, or equivalent.
- Experience bringing up new boards.
- Fluency in low-level interfaces: SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, ADC.
- Bench experience with oscilloscope, network analyzer, or RF spectrum analyzer.
- Senior-level scope spanning hardware, firmware, cloud and quality from concept to shipped product.
- Fluency in C.
Nice to have
- BLE at depth, including PHY understanding and orchestration for performant, power-efficient use.
- Cellular IoT experience: LTE-M or NB-IoT modem integration, power state management, and certification (FCC, PTCRB, carrier approval).
- Securing embedded systems end to end: secure boot, firmware signing, cryptography, and key management.
- OTA and device firmware update at fleet scale: A/B partitions, rollback.
- Factory floor experience with mass production and quality assurance of electronics, including fixing production show stoppers.
Details
- Remote - SF Bay Area location line.
- Annual base salary range $162,400 to $290,000 USD, varying by primary work location.
