Staff Platform Database Engineer

Overview

Lead the strategy, architecture, tooling, and operation of Chainguard’s database platform across engineering teams. This hands-on Staff-level role focuses on scalable, resilient, globally available database infrastructure.

What you'll do

• Define database deployment, management, scaling, and operations strategy.
• Inventory database systems and prioritize resiliency and risk improvements.
• Design replication, high availability, backups, disaster recovery, migrations, and capacity planning.
• Build production-grade tooling, governance models, and automated guardrails.
• Write production code for database deployment, management, and reliability systems.
• Design globally distributed systems accounting for latency, EU data residency, and sovereignty.
• Lead company-wide database infrastructure initiatives and architectural standards.

What you'll need

• 8+ years building and operating production database and platform infrastructure in modern cloud environments.
• Staff-level experience leading complex initiatives across multiple engineering teams.
• Strong PostgreSQL and MySQL experience.
• Hands-on experience with replication, high availability, backups, recovery, migrations, and capacity planning.
• Experience with globally available, geographically distributed database systems at scale.
• Experience with AWS, Google Cloud, Linux, and Go.
• Strong communication, cross-functional leadership, and infrastructure-tooling skills.

Nice to have

• Deep knowledge of database internals.
• Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code experience.
• Experience running stateful systems on Kubernetes.
• Experience building database platforms or self-service infrastructure.
• Experience with database governance, policy enforcement, and developer enablement.

Details

• Remote position in the United States.
• Base salary: $205,000–$231,000 USD yearly.
