Staff Software Engineer - Margin & Risk

Overview

Lead the technical direction of the Margin & Risk team, building high-consequence systems for margin calculation, real-time risk enforcement, exposure limits, and margin-call automation across asset classes.

What you'll do

• Own the architecture and technical roadmap for margin and risk across asset classes.
• Design and build correct, testable, and observable margin and risk services.
• Lead real-time risk enforcement on the order path.
• Drive reliability, performance, state recovery, and failure isolation across services.
• Partner with product, brokerage operations, compliance, and engineering teams on integrations.
• Lead design reviews, mentor engineers, and raise engineering standards.
• Handle production escalations and drive prevention after incidents.

What you'll need

• 8+ years of backend or distributed-systems experience.
• Ownership of a high-volume production system where defects could cause financial loss or data-integrity failures.
• Experience designing and shipping transactional, low-latency, high-throughput systems.
• Strong Go expertise, or deep Java, C++, or Rust experience with willingness to work primarily in Go.
• Deep knowledge of relational databases, transactions, consistency, and concurrency.
• Experience with event-driven systems, service-oriented systems, and Kubernetes.
• Track record of technical leadership and mentorship.

Nice to have

• Hands-on margin or risk experience across multiple asset classes.
• Familiarity with portfolio margin, Reg T, options spread margin, or futures margin.
• Background in brokerage, clearing, exchange, ledger, payments, or settlement systems.
• Experience with workflow orchestration such as Temporal.
• Experience with observability, performance tuning, migrations, or production refactors.

• Remote across the Americas or EU.
• No direct people management; leadership is through architecture, code, reviews, and mentorship.
