Assistant General Counsel - Retirement & Employee Benefits

Overview

Serve as the principal legal advisor for Empower's defined benefit and multiemployer retirement businesses. Provide practical counsel on ERISA, tax, fiduciary, operational, administrative, and regulatory matters while supporting business operations, product development, and strategic growth.

What you'll do

• Advise leaders on defined benefit and Taft-Hartley business operations and legal matters.
• Support retirement and employee benefit product development, administration, and enhancements.
• Advise on plan qualification, funding, fiduciary issues, compliance, corrections, and transactions.
• Provide counsel on health and welfare plans and consumer-directed healthcare arrangements.
• Monitor legal and regulatory developments and translate them into business guidance.
• Lead cross-functional initiatives and support commercial negotiations.
• Build legal frameworks, governance processes, and compliance practices.

What you'll need

• 12+ years of relevant legal experience.
• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
• Active license to practice law.
• Expertise in defined benefit and multiemployer plans.
• Knowledge of ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, Treasury regulations, and related guidance.
• Experience advising business leaders across multiple functions.
• Strong written, verbal, judgment, and communication skills.

Nice to have

• In-house experience in retirement plans, financial services, insurance, trust, custody, asset management, or employee benefits.
• Experience with pension risk transfers, plan terminations, de-risking, or complex pension matters.
• Experience interacting with IRS or Department of Labor regulators.

Details

• Remote position.
• Base salary: $151,800–$220,050 per year.
• U.S. work authorization required; visa sponsorship is unavailable.
