Backend Engineer, Create: Source Code Experience (Ruby)

Overview

Backend Engineer on the Source Code Experience team, building reliable and efficient source code workflows with Ruby and GraphQL. The role supports GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated.

What you'll do

• Develop secure, tested, and performant features using Ruby and GraphQL.
• Design and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic.
• Collaborate with product, design, testing, security, research, and engineering teams.
• Use and critically review artificial intelligence coding agent output.
• Monitor production health, participate in Tier 2 on-call, and troubleshoot incidents.
• Improve observability, resiliency, and system reliability.
• Share knowledge through code reviews, documentation, and collaboration.

What you'll need

• Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or APIs.
• Experience with Ruby and GraphQL.
• Understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, and background processing.
• Experience with backend performance practices and user-facing workflows.
• Experience writing backend unit and integration tests.
• Familiarity with Git and collaborative code review.
• Clear English communication and ability to manage priorities in a remote, asynchronous environment.
