Distinguished Engineer focused on pioneering and scaling autonomous, agentic SDLC capabilities across GitLab.
What you'll do
- Define and continuously refine a company-wide technical vision for autonomous, agentic SDLC.
- Identify and prioritize non-linear productivity opportunities across the SDLC.
- Translate ambiguous problem spaces into concrete, iterable roadmaps with Product, AI/ML, and Architecture teams.
- Lead hands-on experiments and prototypes for autonomous engineering workflows (e.g., autonomous MR authoring and test triage).
- Design and implement reference architectures with safety guardrails, observability, and human-in-the-loop controls.
- Develop evaluation frameworks and select internal use cases as pathfinders through adoption and metrics.
- Mentor senior engineers and serve as an escalation point for complex technical decisions related to agentic workflows.
What you'll need
- 10+ years of software engineering experience.
- 4+ years in a Staff, Principal, or equivalent senior technical leadership role.
- Deep expertise in AI/ML systems, including large language models and agentic frameworks.
- Proven record leading hands-on technical experimentation with evaluation frameworks and benchmarks.
- Strong background in scalable, multi-tenant distributed systems (observability and operational resilience).
- Experience designing human-in-the-loop controls, safety guardrails, and responsible AI practices for production systems.

- Role location includes Remote positions in Canada, Poland, United Kingdom, and United States.
- United States base salary range: $250,000–$349,000 USD for the listed level.
