Forward Deployed Engineer, Legal [Office of the CTO]

Overview

Forward Deployed Engineer embedded in Coinbase’s Legal organization within the Office of the CTO, helping identify automation opportunities and prototype AI-enabled legal workflows.

What you'll do

• Embed with Legal leadership to surface high-leverage workflow automation opportunities.
• Prototype rapidly using Coinbase’s existing AI platform before recommending net-new builds.
• Partner with the VP of Legal and CCO to translate legal workflows into engineering requirements.
• Define a build-vs-buy strategy for Legal tooling (build, adopt, procure, or retire).
• Design automated legal outputs to be traceable, reviewable, and defensible with privilege boundaries and auditability.
• Drive adoption through brown-bags, prototype walkthroughs, and feedback loops.

What you'll need

• 5+ years of software engineering experience shipping production systems in ambiguous, stakeholder-heavy environments.
• Hands-on experience deploying LLM-based applications, including prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, hallucination guardrails, and human-in-the-loop design.
• Ability to embed with non-technical domain experts and translate complex workflows into engineering requirements.
• Familiarity with legal/compliance systems concepts such as contract lifecycle management and regulatory filing workflows.
• Familiarity with multi-agent orchestration concepts including handoffs, escalation, and auditability.
• Experience in forward deployed engineering/solutions engineering/embedded advisory capacity, ideally in legal-tech/compliance-tech/RegTech.
• Open to learning; does not need to be an attorney.
