Overview
Hardware Design/Test Engineer within NXP's Hardware Solutions Competency Center (HWS-CC), covering the full hardware lifecycle from requirements capture through circuit design, PCB coordination, bring-up, validation, EMI/EMC support and sustaining engineering for board-level hardware.
What you'll do
- Contribute to board-level architecture and component selection based on technical requirements.
- Design analog, digital, power-supply, clock, reset, boot-configuration and interface circuits.
- Develop and review schematics for microcontroller-, microprocessor- or SoC-based hardware.
- Read and interpret component datasheets, reference manuals, design guidelines and interface specifications.
- Define PCB placement, routing, stack-up, grounding, impedance and power-distribution requirements.
- Coordinate with PCB layout engineers and participate in schematic and layout reviews.
- Apply design-for-manufacturing, design-for-test, reliability and component-derating guidelines.
- Maintain design data in PDM/PLM or version-control systems; support ECOs and NPI activities.
- Prepare board bring-up plans and perform initial power, clock, reset, boot and interface validation.
- Debug board-level issues using schematics, PCB files, measurements, firmware logs and component documentation.
- Use laboratory equipment including oscilloscopes, DMMs, logic analyzers, programmable power supplies, electronic loads, protocol analyzers and JTAG/boundary-scan debug tools.
- Develop and execute functional, electrical, interface, power, thermal and margin test procedures.
- Document test setups, measurements, observations, failures, root causes and corrective actions.
- Use basic scripting (Python or similar) for test automation, data logging or measurement analysis.
- Support EMI/EMC design reviews covering grounding, shielding, filtering, return paths and interface protection.
- Participate in pre-compliance and certification testing (radiated/conducted emissions, immunity, ESD, electrical safety, environmental compliance).
- Work with compliance laboratories and internal teams to investigate certification failures and validate corrective actions.
- Collaborate with PCB layout, firmware, software, mechanical, thermal, manufacturing and compliance teams.
- Support prototype builds, component replacements, board revisions and sustaining-engineering activities.
- Provide effort estimates, flag design risks and component availability issues, and communicate technical status to the project lead.
What you'll need
- 3-5 years of relevant experience in board-level hardware design, bring-up, testing or validation.
- Hands-on experience designing and debugging analog and digital electronic circuits.
- Experience with microcontrollers, processors, SoCs, memories, PMICs, voltage regulators, clock devices and standard board-level peripherals.
- Practical experience in schematic capture and PCB design review using tools such as Cadence OrCAD/Allegro, or equivalent.
- Understanding of multilayer PCB design: grounding, return paths, controlled impedance, decoupling and power distribution.
- Experience bringing up prototype boards and troubleshooting power, clock, reset, boot, memory and interface-related issues.
- Working knowledge of commonly used interfaces: UART, I2C, SPI, USB, Ethernet, CAN, JTAG, SD/eMMC, SMBus or PMBus.
- Working familiarity with multiple high-speed interfaces (PCIe, DDR4/5, LPDDR, high-speed USB or SerDes); ability to interpret SI simulation results and apply termination/routing guidelines.
- Experience using laboratory equipment: oscilloscopes, DMMs, logic analyzers, programmable power supplies, electronic loads, protocol analyzers and JTAG/boundary-scan debug tools.
- Working understanding of signal integrity, power integrity, transmission-line effects, termination, crosstalk and timing.
- Practical understanding of EMI/EMC design practices: filtering, shielding, grounding, ESD protection and noise reduction.
- Exposure to EMI/EMC pre-compliance or certification testing; ability to support debugging.
- Familiarity with certification standards such as CISPR, IEC, FCC, CE, automotive or industry-specific requirements (expertise in all standards is not expected).
- Ability to prepare clear design documents, test procedures, validation reports and failure-analysis reports.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, written and oral communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Nice to have
- Bachelor's/master's degree in Electronics/Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- Experience with embedded, automotive, industrial, consumer, networking or semiconductor evaluation hardware.
