Overview

Intermediate Backend Engineer (India) at GitLab, responsible for taking backend features and improvements from clarification through to shipping and production follow-up in a remote, asynchronous environment.

What you'll do

• Own and ship backend features and improvements from requirements through delivery and follow-up.
• Design and implement maintainable, secure, observable, and performant backend code.
• Develop APIs, background jobs, integrations, and bounded service functionality.
• Add and improve automated test coverage and review others’ code for quality and operational risk.
• Investigate build, test, deployment, and runtime failures and help address technical debt.
• Use AI productively in daily work and validate outputs.

What you'll need

• Professional experience building and shipping production backend applications.
• Strong programming, API, database, testing, debugging, and performance fundamentals.
• Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or another modern backend language.
• Ability to take a feature from clarification through delivery and follow-up with minimal guidance.
• Sound judgment about security, reliability, performance, maintainability, and operational risk.
• Strong written communication for remote, asynchronous collaboration.
• Practical experience with AI coding tools, including reviewing and correcting generated output.
