Senior Back End Engineer

Overview

Senior Backend Engineer for WEX Mobility’s NAM Experiences team, building backend services and APIs that support fleet management and mobility payments for customers and partners in North America.

What you'll do

• Design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable, high-performance backend code.
• Develop public REST APIs in Java and internal gRPC APIs for service communication.
• Design systems, lead design decisions, and align with other senior engineers.
• Write automated tests including unit, integration, end-to-end, concurrency, and load/performance tests.
• Analyze systems for bottlenecks and tech debt, and implement scalability/stability improvements.
• Implement automation for testing, monitoring, healing, scaling, and CI/CD.
• Provide production live-site support, incident resolution, and troubleshooting with root cause analysis.

What you'll need

• 5-8 years of professional experience in software engineering.
• Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms, OOP design, and problem-solving.
• Expertise designing and developing internet-scale services for scalability, availability, security, and reliability.
• Professional written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers.
• Experience with AWS, including core services, deployment, observability, and monitoring.
• Backend development proficiency in Java, Go or C#, including Spring Boot; REST API development; and SQL/Mongo.

Nice to have

• 8+ years of software engineering experience.
• Experience with event-driven architecture and Kafka.
• Experience working on payment solutions.
• Familiarity with cloud-native architecture using Docker and Kubernetes.
• API security and PCI DSS compliance exposure.
• Ability to work on existing codebases and modernize legacy systems.
