Senior Backend Engineer (L3) - Payments

Overview

Senior Backend Engineer (L3) for the Payments team at OpenFX, owning backend systems for cross-border payment flows across API and GUI.

What you'll do

• Own backend payment flows including initiation, partner routing, lifecycle states, webhooks, returns/recalls, and settlement tracking.
• Build and extend partner integrations for new corridors, including cut-off/calendar handling and reconciliation hooks.
• Design for correctness under failure using idempotency, safe retries, exactly-once effects, and graceful degradation.
• Help engineer regulated controls such as safeguarding flows and transaction monitoring with audit trails.
• Ship end-to-end features across the dashboard surfaces supported by your backend.
• Instrument the money path with payment success and stuck-payment detection plus partner latency/error metrics.
• Participate in on-call and respond to incidents; convert post-mortems into durable fixes.

What you'll need

• 5–7 years of experience building production backend systems, with the majority on server-side and distributed systems.
• Payments/fintech background building systems on a live payment or money path.
• Deep expertise in TypeScript and Node.js and strong REST API design/operation.
• Strong data modeling and PostgreSQL query skills for money state and transactional integrity.
• Experience designing for correctness under failure (idempotency, retries, ordering, duplicates).
• Hands-on experience integrating external partner APIs including webhooks and auth/certificates.
• Experience with asynchronous processing (queues/jobs/workflow engines) and automated backend integration tests.
