Lead Engineer Software

Overview

Lead Software Engineer for Empower’s retail account opening platform, guiding a cross-functional squad and owning architecture for mission-critical microservices.

What you'll do

• Own the design, evolution, and quality of mission-critical microservices for scheduling workflows.
• Lead technical discovery and design, including writing and socializing ADRs and running design reviews.
• Advance clean code practices and definition of done, ensuring high coverage and reliable CI/CD gates.
• Architect AWS cloud-native solutions and define infrastructure as code in Terraform.
• Improve reliability via observability, performance engineering, secure/PII-free logging, and incident postmortems.
• Mentor engineers through pairing, roadmap shaping, documentation, and constructive challenge.
• Collaborate across Product, SRE, Data, and InfoSec to deliver secure, scalable APIs and event flows.

What you'll need

• 8–10+ years of backend engineering experience, including 1–3+ years leading projects or squads for distributed systems at scale.
• Java/Spring Boot expertise, including concurrency, resilience patterns, profiling, and robust testing.
• AWS proficiency with DynamoDB, Lambda, API Gateway, SQS/FIFO, and IAM roles/policies.
• Strong Terraform experience for infrastructure as code and repeatable, auditable environments.
• Advanced Docker file skills and working knowledge of Kubernetes tuning and operations.
• Experience designing CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins or GitLab CI) with functional tests, static analysis, vulnerability scanning, and performance testing.
• Ability to communicate clearly via technical writing and alignment using docs and diagrams.

Nice to have

• Modernization from monoliths to event-driven/streaming architectures.
• Advanced Kubernetes experience (operators, service meshes).
• Background in financial services or other regulated industries.
• Experience with Microsoft Graph API, Microsoft Bookings, Microsoft RBAC, and Salesforce integration.
