Overview
Lead Mechanical Design Engineer responsible for designing and developing mechanical components, assemblies and systems using SolidWorks, while supporting project delivery, internal process improvements and GD&T technical governance for plant items.
What you'll do
- Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and systems using SolidWorks, ensuring accuracy, functionality and manufacturability.
- Ensure project delivery teams adhere to common standards and the latest design delivery techniques.
- Support project teams on proposal and project delivery tasks.
- Define, interpret, review and approve dimensional and geometrical requirements for plant items and mechanical components.
- Act as the technical lead and controlling authority for GD&T within the design team.
- Establish the tolerancing strategy and ensure that 3D models, manufacturing drawings and product definitions clearly communicate design intent.
- Provide technical governance and independent checking of datum schemes, feature control frames, form, orientation, location, profile and runout controls, material-condition principles, limits and fits, and tolerance stack-ups.
- Ensure GD&T requirements are functionally justified and compatible with assembly, manufacturability, inspection, interchangeability and quality requirements.
- Lead and mentor designers and engineers on GD&T application.
- Resolve complex tolerancing issues and interface with engineering, manufacturing, quality, suppliers and client stakeholders where required.
- Identify, interpret and apply required industry, client and internal CAD/BIM standards to ensure finished products are project- and client-compliant.
- Work independently and take proactive initiative.
- Check work and complete specifically assigned tasks to time and cost.
- Show flexibility in work tasks and locations.
What you'll need
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline.
- 10+ years' experience in relevant fields.
- Minimum 10+ years of relevant mechanical design experience.
- Substantial practical application of GD&T on complex mechanical and plant items, with the capability to lead and approve GD&T-related work.
- Demonstrable experience applying BS 8888 / ISO GPS and/or ASME Y14.5 on production engineering drawings and 3D model-based product definitions.
- Ability to perform or review tolerance stack-up analyses.
- Ability to translate functional and assembly requirements into appropriate dimensional and geometrical controls.
- Significant hands-on expertise in GD&T.
- Advanced working knowledge of BS 8888 and the associated ISO Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) framework, or relevant North American equivalents such as ASME Y14.5, subject to applicable client requirements.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, including advanced features such as surfacing, sheet metal and assemblies.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
- Ability to perform self-motivated development.
Nice to have
- Experience with design validation techniques such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
- Previous experience in nuclear, power, heavy engineering, precision equipment or similarly controlled design environments.
- CANDU project experience.
