Overview
Lead Android Engineer responsible for the technical direction of one or more Android apps and SDKs, including architecture standards, key technology decisions, and accountability for stability, performance, and release health.
What you'll do
- Own and evolve Android app/SDK architecture, including Gradle module boundaries, dependency graph, state management, navigation, and offline/sync strategy.
- Author technical design documents and run design reviews while enforcing Clean Architecture, MVVM/MVI, SOLID principles, and consistent patterns.
- Steward public Android SDK APIs, including semantic versioning, backward compatibility, and deprecation policy.
- Lead delivery across multi-quarter initiatives by breaking down work into scoped, sequenced, estimable tasks, and personally delivering highest-risk components.
- Own release and build operations, including staged rollouts, rollback procedures, and CI/CD reliability.
- Define and enforce quality and reliability targets (test strategy, crash-free sessions, ANR rate, performance budgets) and lead production incident response.
- Mentor engineers, lead code review culture, and support hiring and onboarding for Android engineering.
What you'll need
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience and 6+ years shipping production Android applications.
- 2+ years in a technical leadership role owning architecture and outcomes for a team.
- Expert-level Kotlin with strong Java interop, plus deep Android SDK and debugging/profiling toolchain knowledge.
- Demonstrated ownership of non-trivial Android architecture at scale, including multi-module Gradle and dependency management.
- Deep expertise in Coroutines and Flow, structured concurrency, threading, and memory leak/race/deadlock diagnosis.
- Strong experience with Jetpack Compose and Views toolkit, and Jetpack libraries including Lifecycle, Navigation, WorkManager, and Paging.
- Clean Architecture, MVVM/MVI, SOLID, and DI frameworks (Dagger/Hilt), plus local persistence (Room/SQLite) and networking (Retrofit/OkHttp).
Nice to have
- Experience building and shipping a public or partner-facing SDK with API design, versioning, and backward-compatibility management.
- Experience with Kotlin Multiplatform or bridging with React Native/Flutter.
- Mobile security depth including keystore, certificate pinning, encryption at rest, obfuscation strategy, and OWASP MASVS familiarity.
- Experience with GraphQL on mobile, including caching and schema evolution.
