Manager Engineering

Overview

Manager Engineering manages validation for the design and development of technologies, components, systems, products, or services. The role leads engineering teams and initiatives while supporting technical solutions, product quality, and on-time delivery.

What you'll do

• Manage staffing, development, and performance management programs for engineering teams.
• Motivate and develop project and team leaders.
• Provide specialized engineering technical support and consulting services to various areas of the organization.
• Manage high-impact, short and long duration engineering initiatives and projects.
• Ensure achievement of the engineering plan and product quality.
• Maintain product release plans and material plans.
• Drive programs to completion on time and within budget.
• Contribute to short-term operational plans.
• Anticipate and adapt to plan changes.
• Monitor progress of work against plan as required to meet objectives.
• Report variances and make agreed-upon corrections.
• Under guidance, develop tactical plans for own direct responsibility.
• Deliver helpful feedback that focuses on behaviors without offending the recipient.
• Listen to feedback without defensiveness and use it for own communication effectiveness.
• Make oral presentations and write reports needed for own work.
• Avoid technical jargon when inappropriate.
• Look for and consider non-verbal cues from individuals and groups.
• Identify and document specific problems and resolution alternatives.
• Examine specific problems and understand the perspective of each involved stakeholder.
• Develop alternative techniques for assessing the accuracy and relevance of information.
• Help analyze risks and benefits of alternative approaches and obtain decisions on resolution.
• Use fact-finding techniques and diagnostic tools to identify problems.
• Advise others on the assessment and provision of technical solutions.
• Engage appropriate subject matter resources to resolve technical issues.
• Mentor others to enhance their technical competence and application to achieve more effective technical solutions.
• Coach others in promoting, defining, analyzing, and providing technical solutions to business problems.
• Provide effective solutions to moderate technical challenges through strong technical competence.
• Assume accountability for personal technical performance and hold others responsible for theirs.
• Surface new or unexpressed customer needs.
• Focus product and service features and functions on the customer's critical success factors.
• Develop consistent methods for maintaining customer responsiveness.
• Deliver customer value within parameters of profitability and other targets.
• Escalate systemic problems that could affect customer satisfaction.
• Assess the time and resources needed to accomplish tasks and delegate work accordingly.
• Explain how the team's work contributes to organizational success and create a shared vision.
• Review employee progress and performance and address bottlenecks or concerns impeding employee growth.
• Use meetings, emails, newsletters, and other channels to communicate important messages regularly.
• Work with employees to set performance standards and career development goals and support achievement.
• Utilize preferred tools, techniques, and methods for estimating project cost and time.
• Plan, estimate, staff, organize, and monitor significant projects.
• Identify risks and vulnerabilities and create contingency plans.
• Conduct regular and ad-hoc project reviews with project teams, sponsors, and clients.
• Maintain open communication among project participants and interested parties.
• Communicate reporting requirements and create monitoring and control mechanisms.
• Develop organizational standards and processes to maximize complex product services' efficiency and effectiveness.
• Create and introduce techniques that expedite or simplify the development process.
• Supervise the management of multiple and diverse types of products or services.
• Develop proof-of-concept exercises to prove or disprove the validity of proposed products.
• Advise on appropriate solutions to complex product design and development problems.
• Design working prototypes of proposed products or services.

What you'll need

• A degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.
• Degree required.
• Knowledge of effective planning techniques and ability to contribute to operational, tactical, and strategic planning.
• Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools, and techniques.
• Knowledge of approaches, tools, and techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational, or process problems.
• Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods.
• Ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
• Understanding of shifting market priorities and ability to respond to internal and external customer needs.
• Knowledge of processes involved in managing people and ability to lead successful teams and address performance and workplace conflict issues.
• Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics.
• Ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects.
• Knowledge of product features and ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through production.
