Principal Database Engineer (Platform Engineer)

Overview

Lead the architecture, implementation, reliability, and lifecycle management of a multi-engine database platform across AWS and Azure. Serve as the senior technical authority and final escalation point for production incidents, performance issues, and database platform projects.

What you'll do

• Design database systems, deployment models, infrastructure, topology, sizing, and availability targets.
• Build multi-cloud database infrastructure across AWS and Azure.
• Author and review Terraform infrastructure-as-code for database provisioning and lifecycle automation.
• Own production reliability, monitoring, observability, alerting, and incident resolution.
• Design, test, and audit high-availability, disaster-recovery, backup, and restore architectures.
• Lead performance investigations, production 911 incidents, and cross-team database escalations.
• Manage database platform projects from requirements through implementation, testing, deployment, and handoff.

What you'll need

• 10+ years of relevant work experience.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
• Expertise in SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, and Snowflake.
• Expertise in AWS and Azure database engineering across managed and self-managed deployments.
• Expertise in T-SQL, PowerShell, Python, Bash, and Terraform.
• Expertise in database performance tuning, high availability, disaster recovery, security, and infrastructure architecture.
• Expertise in project management and change management principles.

Nice to have

• Master's degree or equivalent experience at the expert level.
• ITIL Foundations certification.
• Microsoft database, Azure, or data engineering certifications.

Details

• Remote in the United States.
• Primarily remote or in a standard office environment.
• Up to 10% travel may be required.
• After-hours, on-call, holiday, and peak-period support may be required.
