Principal Engineer, Frontend

Overview

Principal Engineer for Plane’s local-first frontend client, responsible for real-time experiences, state/sync, offline behavior, and UI foundations for large workspaces.

What you'll do

• Build real-time and local-first behavior across work items, boards, documents, and other core surfaces.
• Own client-side state, synchronization, caching, offline behavior, and conflict resolution.
• Drive frontend performance for large workspaces including rendering, memory usage, load times, and interaction latency.
• Set frontend architecture and engineering standards and review high-risk designs/implementations.
• Collaborate with product, design, and backend teams to ship end-to-end features from API to screen.

What you'll need

• 10+ years of software engineering experience.
• Experience with React, TypeScript, and frontend architecture at scale.
• Built real-time applications using WebSockets, subscriptions, or event-driven architectures.
• Worked on local-first problems including persistence, synchronization, caching, and offline behavior.
• Fixed frontend performance problems in complex, data-heavy applications.
• Understands state management and browser architecture and designs maintainable frontend systems.

Nice to have

• Built collaborative/multi-user applications with concurrent updates.
• Experience with CRDTs, OT, or other synchronization/conflict-resolution approaches.
• Built dense products such as project management tools, editors, spreadsheets, or design tools.
• Used IndexedDB, Service Workers, virtualization, Web Workers, or similar browser technologies.
• Contributed to or maintained large open-source applications.
