Principal Production Engineer — Operations

Overview

Principal Production Engineer — Operations is a senior individual-contributor role providing final escalation authority and on-call anchor leadership for a shift.

What you'll do

• Hold on-call anchor responsibility for your shift and lead L1/L2/L3 operations engineers.
• Direct real-time triage and dispatch, escalating or resolving based on shift decisions.
• Lead in-shift major incident execution and coordinate cross-team incident response.
• Drive engineering-grade root-cause analyses and convert recurring incidents into runbooks/automation/alert tuning.
• Validate and pressure-test runbooks, alerting, rollback paths, and observability coverage.
• Ensure operational practices comply with Lilly standards and applicable regulatory requirements.

What you'll need

• 10+ years of professional technology experience.
• At least four years in production incident response and named on-call ownership.
• Ability to debug across multiple technology stacks without deep application-domain knowledge.
• Read logs, traces, code, and configuration across at least four listed technology families and shipped fixes in three.
• Working fluency with at least one major cloud platform (AWS preferred; Azure or GCP acceptable).
• Working fluency with at least one major observability platform (Splunk preferred, others listed).
• Scripting ability in Python or Bash (ideally both) to create remediations/automations during incidents.
