Research Scientist/Engineer, Biological Safety

Overview

Research Scientist/Engineer focused on biological safety—building evaluation methods, training data, and safeguards that control how models handle biological knowledge.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and run capability evaluations for models in the biological domain.
• Generate and curate training and evaluation datasets for safety classifiers.
• Train, tune, and iterate on safety classifiers with ML engineers for robustness and low false positives.
• Build evaluation and classifier development tooling and pipelines.
• Analyze classifier and eval performance against production traffic and prioritize improvements.
• Design and run red-teaming and stress-testing of safeguards as threats and models evolve.

What you'll need

• Strong proficiency in Python for scientific programming and data analysis.
• Excellent grasp of ML fundamentals with ability to adopt ML development practices.
• Excellent knowledge of modern biology, including high-throughput assays and engineering topics.
• Ability to build and maintain your own tooling rather than relying on others.
• Experience designing quantitative evaluations and drawing defensible conclusions from noisy results.
• Strong analytical and writing skills, including explaining technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
