Overview
Join Barclays as an SDET to design, develop and improve software and spearhead the evolution of infrastructure and deployment pipelines. The role focuses on performance and volume testing, secure and scalable software delivery, and operational excellence.
What you'll do
- Develop and deliver high-quality software solutions using industry-aligned programming languages, frameworks and tools.
- Ensure code is scalable, maintainable and optimized for performance.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
- Participate in code reviews and promote code quality and knowledge sharing.
- Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and contribute to technology communities.
- Apply secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data and ensure secure software solutions.
- Implement effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability and reliability.
- Design, execute and analyse load, stress and endurance testing scenarios.
- Analyse performance test results, identify application, database and infrastructure bottlenecks, and provide actionable insights to engineering teams.
- Work with Dev, DevOps and QE teams to drive performance improvement and resolution.
- Perform prescribed activities in a timely manner and to a high standard while driving continuous improvement.
- Partner with other functions and business areas and act as a contact point for stakeholders outside the immediate function.
- Take responsibility for team operational processing and activities, risk management, controls and relevant policies, regulations and codes of conduct.
- Make evaluative judgements based on factual information, resolve problems through acquired technical experience and communicate complex or sensitive information.
What you'll need
- Hands-on experience in API performance testing using tools such as JMeter, LoadRunner or Gatling, with the ability to simulate realistic traffic patterns and workloads.
- Solid understanding of test strategy, workload modelling, test data setup and performance metrics including throughput, latency, response time and error rate.
- Experience analysing performance test results and identifying application, database and infrastructure bottlenecks.
- Working knowledge of monitoring and observability tools such as Splunk, Dynatrace, AppDynamics or Grafana.
- Good understanding of banking or payment systems or distributed microservices architectures.
- Strong collaboration skills to work with Dev, DevOps and QE teams.
- Strong experience in Performance & Volume Testing, including design, execution and analysis.
- In-depth technical knowledge and experience in the assigned area of expertise.
- Thorough understanding of the underlying principles and concepts within the area of expertise.
- Ability to advise and influence decision-making within the area of expertise.
- Ability to manage risk, strengthen controls and deliver work in line with relevant rules, regulations and codes of conduct.
- Ability to make evaluative judgements based on factual information and resolve problems through acquired technical experience and precedents.
Nice to have
- Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and integrating performance tests into automated pipelines such as GitLab or Jenkins.
- Knowledge of cloud-based performance testing using AWS or Azure and scalability testing.
- Experience designing end-to-end performance test strategies for customer journeys across UI and API layers.
- Understanding of resilience testing, chaos testing and failover validation.
- Basic scripting skills in Java or Python for custom test development and data preparation.
- Familiarity with non-functional test governance, reporting dashboards and stakeholder communication, including SteerCo and impact reports.
- Experience in the Business Banking or Payments domain, such as FPS, RPS, Bill Payments or APIs.
