Senior Backend Engineer, Database Excellence (Ruby)

Overview

Build backend data frameworks and tooling that keep GitLab application datastores scalable, healthy, and safe across GitLab.com and self-managed deployments. Focus on data growth controls, retention and lifecycle management, and database scalability using PostgreSQL and Ruby on Rails.

What you'll do

• Develop backend features and data frameworks for SaaS and self-managed deployments.
• Build retention, lifecycle management, and bulk data removal tooling.
• Implement guardrails including static analysis and schema-change-time enforcement.
• Design tooling such as SQL traffic replay and background operations frameworks.
• Review database changes for data integrity, safety, and performance.
• Document database best practices and data architecture guidance.
• Identify and address scalability, performance, and data health issues.

What you'll need

• Professional software engineering experience with PostgreSQL in large production environments.
• Experience with high availability, automatic failover, and zero-downtime migrations.
• Experience managing large or fast-growing datasets through retention, archiving, partitioning, or lifecycle management.
• Proficiency with Ruby on Rails or another Ruby framework.
• Ability to reason about system-level software design, algorithms, and performance trade-offs.
• Strong written communication and asynchronous collaboration skills.
• Willingness to participate in a tier 2 database on-call rotation.
