Senior Software Engineer, Database Engineer

Overview

Senior Software Engineer responsible for developing, operating, and scaling distributed relational database infrastructure serving data at petabyte scale.

What you'll do

• Optimize queries, indexes, and schemas for customer-facing APIs on Postgres/Citus.
• Identify and ship validated compression and data-model improvements to reduce storage and compute costs.
• Build automation for database operations including pgbouncer provisioning, disk scaling, and blue-green deployments.
• Validate database changes before production to protect data integrity and latency.
• Manage CDC pipelines and troubleshoot replication failures.
• Migrate workloads and prototype new data stores.
• Create AI-native runbooks and reusable internal tooling.

What you'll need

• 5–8 years building and operating production PostgreSQL or equivalent distributed Postgres.
• Deep SQL optimization skills, including explain plans, partitioning, index design, and query-planner behavior.
• Hands-on experience with CDC tools such as PeerDB, Fivetran, Debezium, Datastream, or Airbyte.
• Database profiling experience with pganalyze or an equivalent tool.
• Production automation experience in Python or Go.
• Daily use of AI coding tools such as Claude or Copilot.
• Experience using AI-assisted analysis for measurable production cost or performance improvements.

Nice to have

• Postgres extension development experience.

Details

• Location: North America.
• Distributed, async-first team working across US and Canada hours.
• On-call rotation approximately once every 15 days, subject to stated regional compliance review.
• US base salary: $200,000–$220,000 yearly.
