Senior Java Engineer (Design & DSA)

Overview

As a Senior Software Engineer, build and scale the Okta Recovery Vault, an enterprise-grade soft-delete and object recovery capability for critical identity objects. Own the technical design, implementation, and operational reliability of components in a real-time recovery system.

What you'll do

• Drive the technical design and end-to-end implementation of complex features, such as granular and bulk recovery workflows across Free and Advanced Resilience tiers.
• Design and build reliable core components for real-time recovery systems that capture deletion events and support scalable data restoration.
• Solve engineering problems around relationship restoration, including group memberships, app assignments, device enrollments, and state consistency.
• Implement secure logging and tracking for recovery operations, including soft-delete, restore, and permanent-delete, in Syslog to adhere to audit and compliance standards.
• Partner with Product Managers and technical leads to clarify requirements, define technical scope, and break down complex projects into actionable milestones.
• Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and enhance system observability, logging, and metrics.
• Champion engineering best practices through code reviews, automated testing, and technical documentation.
• Provide guidance and peer mentorship to intermediate and junior engineers.

What you'll need

• 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience building and scaling highly reliable, production-grade applications.
• Strong proficiency in object-oriented programming, with extensive experience in Java and the Spring Boot framework.
• Solid experience with distributed system patterns, asynchronous job processing, and event-driven architectures.
• Proficiency with relational databases, such as MySQL, and caching strategies, such as Redis, to manage state and high-throughput data snapshots.
• Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining robust RESTful APIs for enterprise integration.
• Proven track record of independently breaking down ambiguous requirements into clean, scalable software designs.
• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with Identity and Access Management standards, including SCIM, SAML, OAuth, and OIDC, or directory services, including AD and LDAP.
• Experience with resilient systems design, such as retry strategies, circuit breakers, and rate limiting.
• Hands-on experience with feature flagging frameworks and gradual/canary deployment strategies.
• Experience with queueing systems or message brokers, such as Kafka.
