Senior Manager of Software Engineering

Overview

Senior Technology Manager role leading engineering delivery for Morningstar Indexes platform modernization initiatives.

What you'll do

• Lead one or more engineering workstreams for platform modernization, cloud adoption, and application resiliency.
• Own technical execution across engineering squads and align delivery plans with business, architecture, product, security, and acceptance criteria.
• Steward engineering practices covering design, code quality, observability, resiliency, performance, security, and technical-debt management.
• Manage and develop software engineers, QA engineers, automation engineers, and scrum master(s) using Agile practices.
• Partner with product, operations, research, QA/QC, architecture, security, infrastructure, and global stakeholders to clarify requirements and manage risks.
• Drive AI-assisted engineering practices and establish reusable engineering playbooks, automation frameworks, and standards.

What you'll need

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Software Engineering/Information Technology or equivalent practical experience.
• 12+ years of experience in progressively senior technology roles, including complex software delivery/platform modernization.
• 5+ years managing engineering teams using Agile delivery practices.
• Hands-on background in Java, Spring Boot, APIs, microservices, SQL databases, and secure software engineering.
• Practical cloud experience, preferably AWS, including ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS/PostgreSQL, Glue, Step Functions, IAM, KMS, monitoring, and CI/CD automation.
• Mandatory AI-based development experience using AI coding assistants or generative AI tools.
• Ability to apply responsible AI practices, including prompt discipline, human review, validation controls, and security awareness.

• Hybrid work environment: collaborate in-person each week; in most locations hybrid is four days in-office each week.
