Overview
Senior Software Developer role at ABC Fitness Solutions focused on owning meaningful production features end to end, making sound engineering decisions, and guiding other engineers.
What you'll do
- Connect engineering work to customer outcomes by learning how customers and staff use the product, including its important workflows, constraints, and known limitations.
- Use product and business metrics to help the team decide what to build, prioritize, and measure whether a change helped.
- Participate in customer or support discussions when your technical context can help clarify the problem and identify an actionable next step.
- Turn an unclear problem into a shared plan, a sensible technical approach, and a clear definition of done.
- Stay with the feature through design, implementation, testing, rollout, monitoring, and follow-up instead of treating release as the finish line.
- Coordinate with Product, Design, Test, and adjacent teams so dependencies, decisions, and owners are visible early.
- Make technical decisions within the team's domain across service structure, APIs, data, reliability, security, observability, and maintainability.
- Record important choices, alternatives, trade-offs, and deferred work so other engineers can understand and build on the decision.
- Choose solutions that support the wider system, not only the quickest local implementation.
- Write readable, maintainable production code with appropriate unit, integration, and contract coverage.
- Design useful logs, metrics, dashboards, and alerts so the team can understand how a change behaves in production.
- Investigate complex problems across services and database layers, identify root causes, and keep the team oriented while resolving them.
- Share status, risks, dependencies, owners, and next steps before others have to ask.
- Explain technical trade-offs to Product and customer impact to non-engineering partners without relying on internal jargon.
- Question the problem before implementation begins and recommend a path forward when requirements or constraints are unclear.
- Coach junior and mid-level engineers through reviews, pairing, design discussions, and constructive feedback.
- Help the team turn retrospectives, story mapping, and improvement ideas into decisions and follow-through.
- Share useful improvements beyond the immediate feature when they can help another squad or engineering community.
- Use AI-assisted development tools where they improve speed or clarity, while independently validating correctness, security, maintainability, and test coverage.
- Understand and take ownership of every change that reaches production, regardless of how the initial code or test suggestion was produced.
What you'll need
- Demonstrated experience taking production software from an unclear problem through design, implementation, release, and follow-up.
- Strong hands-on experience developing and maintaining Java applications and services in a production environment.
- Experience with a modern Java framework, such as Spring or Spring Boot, and with designing maintainable service and API boundaries.
- Solid relational database skills, including SQL, schema design, indexing, transactions, migrations, query-performance troubleshooting, and choosing appropriate data-access patterns.
- An understanding of when relational data is the right fit and when a document, key-value, search, or other persistence approach may be appropriate.
- Experience designing or integrating REST APIs and, where relevant, asynchronous messaging or event-driven workflows.
- A practical testing approach that includes unit tests and the appropriate integration, contract, or end-to-end tests for the change.
- Experience with production observability, including structured logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards, and incident or problem investigation.
- Working knowledge of secure software practices, including authentication, authorization, secrets, data protection, and safe handling of customer information.
- Clear written and spoken communication with engineers, Product, Support, and other partners in a distributed or cross-functional environment.
- A record of helping other engineers grow through feedback, pairing, code review, or technical guidance.
- Equivalent practical experience is welcome; demonstrated capability is assessed rather than a degree or a strict years-of-experience cutoff.
Nice to have
- Experience in fitness, wellness, membership, subscription, booking, or other customer workflow products.
- Experience with cloud-hosted services, containers, CI/CD pipelines, and production release automation.
- Experience with NoSQL or search technologies, and performance or scalability improvements.
- Experience working with AI-assisted development practices and helping teammates validate AI-generated code safely.
Details
