Senior Software Development Engineer

Overview

The Senior Software Development Engineer will build and evolve robust, scalable, high-performance backend services and software components for Expedia Group's lodging connectivity platform. The role supports lodging supply, shopping, booking, servicing, and claims journeys through resilient APIs, AI/ML-enabled solutions, and production-grade systems.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and evolve scalable, reliable services and software components, including system design, low-level design, API design, and data modeling.
• Lead technical design across domains and delivery of complex, multi-quarter initiatives across the 3PI supply system.
• Take end-to-end ownership of complex features or services from technical design through implementation, deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement in production.
• Break down large, ambiguous business problems into reusable technical solutions across domains and services.
• Write, review, and maintain high-quality, well-tested code while driving practices in code quality, security, observability, resilience, and performance.
• Reduce incidents, enhance observability, and optimize performance, reliability, and cost.
• Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions in production-grade software.
• Mentor and guide engineers on software engineering, testing, and architecture.
• Partner with product, analytics, design, and engineering teams to apply data-driven decision-making, define success metrics, and improve system health and user outcomes.
• Participate in design reviews, propose improvements, lead communities of practice, and help shape long-term technical strategy.

What you'll need

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent related professional experience.
• 10+ years of professional, post-college backend software development experience in an object-oriented language, such as Java, Kotlin, or similar.
• Experience owning end-to-end delivery for services or components, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, and support, within a multi-service or multi-domain environment.
• Deep understanding of software design principles, algorithms, and data structures.
• Strong command of object-oriented design, testing, and version control.
• Hands-on experience designing and consuming APIs, working with data models and storage systems, and applying system design principles to build reliable, maintainable systems.
• Hands-on expertise with AI/ML frameworks and tools, and experience applying AI/ML concepts to real-world products.
• Experience building on cloud infrastructure, with AWS preferred, using sound architectural patterns and scalable, cost-efficient, production-quality systems.
• Strong communication skills and effective collaboration skills, including articulating ideas to teammates, peers, and leaders, supporting them with data, and incorporating feedback to find common ground.

Nice to have

• Experience designing and evolving service and application architectures for high-traffic, distributed systems, including clear API contracts, data models, and low-level designs.
• Demonstrated track record driving technical direction for services or domains and making data-informed tradeoffs across scalability, reliability, performance, and cost.
• Experience with partner or third-party integrations, supply or inventory systems, or high-volume marketplace platforms.
• Strong focus on operational excellence, including monitoring, alerting, incident response, and continuous improvement of production systems and developer workflows.
• Experience leading cross-team technical initiatives or migrations, influencing engineering best practices across a domain, and guiding teams on effective and responsible use of AI-assisted development and testing tools.
• A self-starter who embraces change and is open to replacing what was built previously with something better.
