Overview
Own the architecture and operation of the infrastructure and control-plane services that run Astro’s Apache Airflow-based platform, including security, reliability, and observability.
What you'll do
- Design and own infrastructure system architecture for Airflow workloads, end-to-end from design through rollout.
- Design and evolve REST/gRPC APIs for infrastructure lifecycle management with data modeling, versioning, and backward compatibility.
- Own networking and security posture, including authentication/authorization and remediation and compliance activities.
- Architect observability and traceability across the stack using metrics, logs, and traces.
- Participate in on-call rotation to diagnose incidents, resolve issues, and drive remediation tracking into sprints.
- Mentor engineers and improve design/code review, testing, and operational rigor.
What you'll need
- 5+ years of experience in infrastructure, platform, or systems engineering.
- Hands-on expertise with Kubernetes, including building custom Operators/CRDs and managing Helm-based deployments.
- Experience designing REST or gRPC APIs for customer-facing UI or programmatic integrations, including versioning and backward compatibility.
- Strength in networking, distributed systems, reliability engineering, and security best practices.
- Proficiency in Go and/or TypeScript (or demonstrated ability to pick up new languages quickly).
- Practical experience designing and/or building observability and distributed tracing for multi-layer systems.
- Ability to lead technical design across teams and communicate trade-offs to engineers and stakeholders.
- Experience mentoring engineers and improving team-wide practices.
Nice to have
- Experience designing or operating multi-tenant control planes.
- Experience shipping software into air-gapped or highly regulated environments.
- Familiarity with Apache Airflow internals or other data-orchestration platforms.
- Incident command/on-call leadership experience.
