Senior Software Engineer (Typescript), AI Clients: Duo CLI

Overview

Senior Software Engineer for GitLab Duo CLI, part of the Developer Clients group in the AI Clients stage, designing and building tools that bring GitLab Duo into developers’ daily terminal workflows.

What you'll do

• Own design, development, and evolution of GitLab Duo CLI features from problem definition to implementation and iteration.
• Build interactive terminal experiences with TypeScript, focusing on command/flag design, output formatting, scripting-friendly behavior, and backward compatibility.
• Improve reliability, observability, and performance for the CLI using reliability and performance metrics while reducing technical debt.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, and engineers to align technical decisions with broader strategy.
• Support product quality, security, and developer experience through reviews and mentorship.
• Contribute to IDE extension work when useful, including a JetBrains plugin (Kotlin) and a VS Code extension (TypeScript).

What you'll need

• Strong proficiency in TypeScript and an interest in developer tooling and CLI design.
• Experience building or maintaining command-line tools, including command/flag design, terminal UI, output formatting, scripting-friendly behavior, and backward compatibility.
• Experience owning technical problems end to end and making architectural trade-offs.
• Clear written and spoken English communication skills in a fully remote, largely asynchronous environment.
• Experience with IDE extension development (JetBrains plugins in Kotlin or VS Code extensions) and understanding of LSP/editor integrations are helpful but not required.
