Software Development Engineer III (Java)

Overview

Build and operate reliable, scalable Java backend services for Expedia Group's core lodging booking and order orchestration platform. The role covers microservice development, legacy modernization, production ownership, and technical collaboration.

What you'll do

• Design and build Java backend services for lodging bookings.
• Migrate monoliths and stored procedures to Spring Boot microservices.
• Own implementation, deployment, monitoring, and incident resolution for production services.
• Improve RDBMS interactions and move database logic into service layers.
• Coordinate technical solutions and contribute to backend engineering standards.
• Review code and present technical design decisions.
• Integrate AI/ML-enabled tools into development and production workflows.

What you'll need

• 6+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong production backend development experience with Java.
• Experience with system design, API contracts, and data modeling.
• Experience with RDBMS-backed applications.
• Exposure to a major cloud platform, preferably AWS.
• Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting tools such as Datadog or Splunk.
• Familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows.

Nice to have

• Deep Java microservices experience with Spring Boot.
• Experience modernizing legacy or monolithic systems.
• Stored procedure experience and database performance tuning.
• Experience operating large-scale, business-critical cloud systems.
• Experience with AI-augmented development or operations.
