Software Engineer, Agent Productivity

Overview

OpenAI is hiring a Staff Software Engineer (Agent Productivity) to build secure foundations and patterns that help teams develop, deploy, and manage agent workflows—starting with Slack.

What you'll do

• Own the technical strategy and architecture for building, connecting, and deploying agents quickly and safely using Slack.
• Design and build services that provide permission-aware access to context, tools, and actions across Slack and enterprise systems.
• Establish scalable patterns for connectivity, context retrieval, authorization, and action execution across systems.
• Develop reusable SDKs, connectors, templates, testing tools, and deployment patterns to reduce integration effort.
• Build policy-aware automation and lifecycle management, including approvals and credential rotation.
• Implement governance and observability enforcing least privilege and providing visibility into agent behavior and data access.
• Set operational standards for reliability, auditability, testing, incident response, and secure self-service.

What you'll need

• Deep hands-on software engineering experience building and operating production systems at scale.
• Strong backend and distributed-systems fundamentals, including API design, integrations, and production reliability.
• Experience building developer platforms, reusable tooling, or shared services that speed development and deployment.
• Experience integrating enterprise platforms such as Slack and working with API, identity, and operational constraints.
• Experience designing secure, permission-aware systems that access sensitive data or act on behalf of users.
• Ability to lead ambiguous technical initiatives while balancing developer experience, security, and long-term architecture.
