Software Engineer - Application Platform

Overview

Software Engineer for Figma’s Application Platform, building and evolving shared backend foundations that power REST APIs and asynchronous job/workflow systems.

What you'll do

• Design and evolve shared Ruby frameworks for REST APIs, asynchronous jobs, workflow orchestration, and data access.
• Improve availability, reliability, scalability, and performance of backend systems for critical product functionality.
• Modernize a large Ruby codebase with safe architectural changes, including moving REST APIs from Sinatra toward Rails.
• Make backend development faster by improving hot reloading, local workflows, test infrastructure, CI reliability, debugging tools, and iteration speed.
• Strengthen scalability, isolation, observability, and recovery capabilities of the asynchronous job platform.
• Partner with product engineers and Infrastructure teams to identify recurring pain points and turn them into reusable platform capabilities.
• Mentor other engineers and contribute to shared ownership and thoughtful execution.

What you'll need

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• 3+ years building production systems with Ruby.
• Experience building and maintaining large Ruby applications and shared backend codebases for multiple engineering teams.
• Ability to design reliable distributed systems at production scale, including APIs, background processing, testing, observability, and operations.
• Experience improving complex systems via architecture, modularization, migrations, performance, reliability, or developer tooling.
• Experience creating scalable abstractions and collaborating with and mentoring engineers across teams.

• Can be held from one of the company’s US hubs or remotely in the United States.
