Overview
Senior Software Engineer on the Emergency Preparedness & Response team, building backend-heavy full-stack systems that keep critical operations running during emergency events.
What you'll do
- Design, build, review, and debug features and services across the stack.
- Work back from customer pain points and business goals to solve the right problem.
- Build highly available, resilient systems that are easy to operate during peak-demand emergency events.
- Break down complex problems into well-scoped deliverables and drive them to completion.
- Design for non-functional requirements including availability, scalability, latency, reliability, cost, and maintainability.
- Instrument work, use metrics to guide decisions, and improve system performance.
- Partner with product, operations, and business stakeholders to align outcomes.
What you'll need
- 4–5 years of demonstrable software development experience building production systems.
- Strong proficiency in Python, Java, or JavaScript with backend-heavy full-stack capability.
- Proven experience building highly available, maintainable, and scalable production systems.
- Solid understanding of non-functional requirements (availability, scalability, reliability, latency, cost, maintainability).
- Metric-driven mindset with instrumentation and data-driven decision-making.
- Strong problem-solving ability and rigorous reasoning about trade-offs.
- Ability to decompose ambiguous problems into smaller achievable deliverables.
Nice to have
- Experience building systems for high-stakes, time-sensitive, or surge-driven conditions.
- Familiarity with distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
- Experience with observability, on-call, and operational excellence practices.
- Experience mentoring peers or junior engineers.
- Exposure to workforce management, procurement, or supply/demand matching domains.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
