Overview
Staff Backend Engineer for Tempo, the open-source distributed tracing backend behind Grafana Cloud Traces and Grafana Enterprise Traces.
What you'll do
- Set technical direction on the hardest problems in the Tempo roadmap.
- Lead multi-quarter initiatives from problem framing through rollout (e.g., aggregation APIs, autoscaling cells, query engine improvements).
- Own architecture of core Tempo components: ingestion, storage, query, and metrics generation.
- Drive design reviews and make trade-offs on performance, cost, and complexity, documenting the rationale.
- Own outcomes against SLOs (P99 write latency, incident recurrence, TCO per ingested GB) and push toward Zero Ops.
- Partner with Product and sibling teams to understand how Tempo is consumed and ship what unblocks them.
- Participate in on-call and contribute to incident response and post-incident learning.
What you'll need
- Track record leading complex, multi-quarter initiatives across design, delivery, and operations.
- Substantial hands-on experience building and operating distributed data systems in production.
- Strong software craftsmanship (clean, robust, performant software).
- Strong Go experience (or a path to it); Tempo is written in Go.
- Operational mindset (owned production services, carried a pager, reduced toil, owned SLOs).
- Clear communication in a fully remote, asynchronous environment.
