Staff Backend Engineer, India

Overview

Staff Backend Engineer (India) is a technical leadership role focused on delivering and leading complex backend initiatives, architecture standards, and modernization work.

What you'll do

• Lead cross-cutting backend initiatives spanning teams and remove systemic bottlenecks.
• Drive modular backend/service/data/platform architecture strategy and monolith modernization.
• Define standards for APIs, contracts, compatibility, schema evolution, testing, security, performance, and operability.
• Create shared operational and development patterns (e.g., dependency management, data ownership, eventing, failure isolation).
• Take part in on-call and incident response, act as escalation during complex incidents, and improve to prevent recurrence.
• Mentor engineers and help reduce technical debt via reusable patterns and documentation/code review.
• Lead adoption of AI-assisted/agentic workflows with quality, security, privacy, and operational guardrails.

What you'll need

• Have a sustained record of technical leadership across more than one team or a broad product area.
• Have deep backend architecture and production experience in complex applications/services/platforms.
• Have production experience modernizing monoliths/legacy backends with modular architecture approaches.
• Be able to create alignment through clear written proposals and decision records without constant escalation.
• Have product judgment balancing delivery speed, reliability, technical health, and long-term platform investment.
• Have experience mentoring engineers through code review and documentation.
• Have production experience with AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows and evaluate team adoption.
