Staff Engineer - Systems Engineering

Overview

Own the conversational AI platform’s system for building, configuring, deploying, and operating voice agents and campaigns at scale. This is an individual contributor role with end-to-end systems scope and authority, without people management.

What you'll do

• Own the end-to-end backend for agent, campaign, and user management, from data modeling through API design to deployment, in Python and FastAPI.
• Orchestrate complex, long-running, stateful operations with Temporal.
• Ensure performance and reliability for a multi-tenant SaaS platform operating at sub-second latency SLOs.
• Build observability through logging, metrics, and tracing so the team can debug production confidently and quickly.
• Build integration testing infrastructure that enables fast shipping without breaking customer-facing systems.
• Collaborate closely with the frontend team using Next.js to deliver an experience worthy of the underlying platform.
• Set a design-first and documentation-first engineering culture within the team.
• Use RFCs before code and write down decisions to avoid tribal knowledge.

What you'll need

• 8-12 years building production backend systems, with deep expertise in Python and FastAPI or Golang.
• Ability to orchestrate high-volume, personalized campaigns and long-running conversations with strong reliability.
• A track record of full-stack ownership, including designing systems end-to-end, making trade-offs, and operating systems in production.
• Hands-on experience with workflow orchestration at scale.
• Experience building and operating high-scale distributed systems that are multi-tenant, low-latency, and resilient under real load.
• Strong PostgreSQL and Redis fundamentals, including schema design, query performance, and caching strategy.
• Judgment to know when to build versus buy, when to optimize versus ship, and when to abstract versus inline.

Nice to have

• Ideally, hands-on experience with Temporal.
• Experience building products on top of LLMs or AI/ML systems.
• Background in telephony, VoIP, or SIP infrastructure.
• Time at an early- or growth-stage startup, with comfort with ambiguity, speed, and ownership.
