Overview
Own the end-to-end configuration, patching, operation, performance, security, availability and recoverability of the Windows Server estate and on-premises infrastructure, including VMware vSphere, Nutanix, HPE GreenLake, Dell Isilon/PowerScale, SAN/NAS storage, Active Directory and Windows and Linux platform services. Administer AWS and Azure infrastructure alongside the on-premises estate, provide second- and third-level escalation, and guide less experienced engineers within a shift-based infrastructure team.
What you'll do
- Provision, configure, harden, maintain and decommission Windows Server using standardized images and documented build standards.
- Administer physical compute and server hardware, including OEM servers, firmware and BIOS, out-of-band management, racking, cabling and support status.
- Monitor system health, capacity and performance, respond to alerts and resolve degradation before incidents occur.
- Support the design and implementation of resilient on-premises infrastructure.
- Administer Nutanix clusters, VMware vSphere environments and HPE GreenLake infrastructure, including health, capacity, lifecycle, upgrades and usage monitoring.
- Plan and execute cluster and hypervisor upgrades with validated rollback and maintain interoperability across firmware, hypervisor and guest operating system levels.
- Monitor virtualization capacity and performance, right-size workloads and forecast growth.
- Administer Dell Isilon/PowerScale, SAN and NAS storage, including provisioning, shares, quotas, snapshots, replication, tiering, firmware, lifecycle and support contracts.
- Manage storage capacity planning and performance troubleshooting.
- Coordinate protection policy, restore and disaster recovery with the Storage and Backup Engineer.
- Administer Active Directory forest and domain structure, domain controllers, FSMO roles, sites and services, replication, organizational units, groups and schema-affecting changes.
- Administer Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, Active Directory Certificate Services, file and print services, shares, permissions, quotas and Windows-based application and management services.
- Maintain directory hygiene and privileged access, including tiering, service account governance and cleanup of stale and orphaned objects.
- Support Entra ID hybrid identity, including Entra Connect synchronization, sync error resolution, device registration and hybrid join.
- Execute domain lifecycle activity, including domain controller promotion and demotion, functional level raises, and domain or forest migration and consolidation.
- Manage recurring patching cycles for Windows Server, hypervisors, firmware and supporting infrastructure.
- Remediate enterprise vulnerability findings through closure and report remediation status, risk acceptance and exceptions.
- Maintain CIS or equivalent hardening baselines, detect configuration drift and remediate deviations.
- Perform structured pre-patch and post-patch validation and document every cycle.
- Follow and enforce change control, risk and impact assessment, tested rollback planning and maintenance-window coordination.
- Author and maintain runbooks for patching, builds, upgrades, failovers and recovery.
- Administer AWS and Azure infrastructure-as-a-service workloads, including compute, disks, images, virtual networking, security groups and resource tagging.
- Extend Windows Server and Active Directory practices into cloud environments, including domain-joined servers, directory services, cross-environment DNS and hybrid connectivity.
- Apply consistent build, hardening, patching and monitoring standards to cloud servers.
- Support workload assessment, migration and rollback between on-premises and cloud environments.
- Monitor cloud consumption and remove orphaned instances, disks and snapshots.
- Support backup, replication and disaster recovery and participate in DR drills and restore testing.
- Develop PowerShell automation and infrastructure-as-code to reduce repetitive administration and configuration drift.
- Provide second- and third-level support, troubleshoot complex issues to root cause and liaise with vendors.
- Work the assigned shift, complete documented shift handovers and verify handovers received at shift start.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers and maintain technical documentation.
