Overview
The Associate Database Engineer develops, tests, debugs, and maintains software applications and relational database solutions under the guidance of senior technical staff.
What you'll do
- Develop, test, debug, and maintain software applications under the guidance of senior technical staff.
- Write and maintain SQL queries, stored procedures, views, functions, and database scripts.
- Assist with relational database design, including tables, relationships, indexes, constraints, and appropriate data types.
- Develop and maintain application functionality that reads from and writes to relational databases.
- Support data imports, exports, transformations, migrations, scheduled processes, and system integrations.
- Troubleshoot application, database, and data-quality issues and assist with basic query and performance optimization.
- Participate in code reviews, testing, documentation, deployments, and source-control workflows using tools such as Git.
- Work with users, analysts, and technical team members to understand requirements and document solutions.
- Gradually assume responsibility for assigned applications, databases, interfaces, and technical processes.
What you'll need
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related field; or equivalent education and practical experience.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Database Engineering.
- Foundational knowledge of relational databases and SQL, including SELECT statements, joins, data modification, aggregations, keys, relationships, constraints, and normalization.
- Foundational programming experience in one or more languages such as C#, Java, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or a comparable language.
- Familiarity with software development concepts including source control, debugging, testing, APIs, and object-oriented programming.
- Ability to analyze technical problems methodically, validate data, document findings, and communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical users.
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new technologies, applications, and business processes.
Nice to have
- Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, or another relational database platform and related database-management tools.
- Exposure to stored procedures, query optimization, REST APIs, ETL/data integration, reporting or business-intelligence tools, and cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
- Internship, academic, personal-project, or professional experience developing database-backed applications.
